Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
LS is an innovative and exciting way to perform many different types of
operations. Instead of one large incision, laparoscopy uses very small
    (fingernail-sized) incisions. A high-resolution camera attached to a scope
allows excellent, magnified vision. Very small, precision instruments are
used to perform virtually all of the operations we use to do through large
    open incisions.
  • What are the Advantages of Laparoscopy?
Much less pain, faster recovery, less scarring, shorter hospital stay.
  • How are Organs Removed?
Tumors, Gallbladders, Colons, small bowel, appendices, spleens, and
other organs can be placed in a bag and decompressed for easy removal.
  • What is the Success of LS?
LS is the gold standard for gallbladder disease and antireflux surgery
for heartburn. It is as safe and effective as open surgery for most other
procedures such as hernia surgery, appendectomy, abdominal exploration etc.
  • Am I a Candidate for LS?
Some patients with internal scar tissue from previous operations or
infections may have to be converted to open surgery and may be at greater
risk for complications. Pregnant patients often wait until after delivery.
Otherwise, nearly all adults and children who have a surgical problem are
candidates for a minimally invasive approach.
  • Is LS good for stopping heartburn?
A Laparoscopic fundoplication is an excellent procedure to stop acid
reflux and control heartburn. Most patients go home soon after the operation
and have complete resolution of symptoms. The may never require antacids
    again.
  • What is the recovery time for LS?
Most patients leave the hospital the same day. Others stay 1-3 days
depending on the type of procedure. Most activities can be resumed in 1-2
    weeks.
